Virtual Learning Environments
A Special Breed of Learning Management System.
As with traditional Learning Management Systems, Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) allow users to view and book places on available classroom training events, and allow the organisation to track attendance, send automated joining instructions, and gather feedback.
VLEs are also designed to provide easy access to eLearning, Virtual Online Classes, and Competency Testing (or Certfication Examinations), and can allow managers to track users' performance. Users can view progress through their learning pathway, and work towards certification or professional development goals.
VLEs can provide a central point for users to access business-critical collateral, such as User Guides, Policy and Procedure Manuals, and search Glossaries and databases of Frequently Asked Questions.
Wikis, Blogs, Forums, and Instant Messaging are other useful elements that may be included in the design of a VLE.
Many organisations also use VLEs to provide online access to a Helpdesk or Support Forums, which can be monitored and updated by internal teams, or by an external support organisation.
